A resolution (Announcement)

An article I read a long time ago described two types of people who start a new venture. The first kind would use the ideal tools, research extensively, perfect their product and device the perfect plan to bring it to the audience. The other kind realising that a task needs to be done would just do the task first and put it out there for criticism. After a while they would take in feedback to improve the work and perfect it the way the audience wants.

Both these kind of people eventually produce a perfect piece for their audience. The difference is that the perfection in the first case is from the creator’s perspective while the second is perfect for the audience. Depending on the nature of the work, either of these perspective can be the need of the hour. So, understanding the requirements of your art or task would tell you the trajectory to follow. Another important factor is the time required to produce the perfect product. This varies largely. The process of producing an outstanding piece of writing, for example, could sometimes be so long that the author would give up on it before its completion while the second kind of person could produce a draft and improve over time, edited and rewritten as and when inspiration comes.

Now, I have always been the first kind of a person. Making sure that my presentation was brilliant before I submit, coupled with procrastination meant that I would often be stressing and panicking right before the deadline. My parents, my sister and my friends have helped me deal with it quite a lot. But after college, I realised that this would not work. Even though I get praised a lot, I have decided not to stress right before the deadline. I want to be the second kind of person who gets the work done and doesn’t fret over its presentation.

So, I have come up with a challenge for myself. I need to publish an article everyday on my Medium. The aim is to have a strict deadline for each day and get over the perfectionist mindset. My plan is to spend some time collating the information I consume all day and in return contribute atleast 5% of it. Ever heard of a brain-dump?

There are a few restrictions —

  • It needs to be coherent, on topic and produce living documents.
  • I need to mention the post publishing edits on each article to track how many times I have edited each article to bring it to the present state.
  • These can be old essay but update it to my current understanding and upload. I have kept aside a lot of writings from my internships, personal observations, inspirations from different articles that I tried/ want to try someday, a lot of shit from the civil and environmental engineering sphere (weirdly enough, I do not find such blogs very easily or they are too dense to understand) and even dreams. So, I have a good runway to start with.
  • No consecutive articles can be about the same thing or in the same format.

Anyway, this is my first post which I am publishing with absolutely no editing. Let’s see how many times I end up editing it in the coming time (hello, to any other self-critical fellow sapiens out there).

XOXO

Rue

PS: Post Publish Edit Count: 5
